I have ten years of accounting experience. I worked for Long and Edmund's CPA's of Warrensburg for five years doing seasonal accounting and tax preparation. Prior to that I worked in Lee's Summit for the law firm of Carl Chinnery and Associates, PC, doing legal and accounting work, and for UMB Bank at their corporate offices in downtown Kansas City, once again doing legal and accounting work. I have almost 20 years of management experience, including starting, building and operating two successful businesses. My husband Mark and I started Cutting Edge Taxidermy in 1999, and I started Cutting Edge Lawn Care in 2004, which is my business. I handle all of the accounting for both of our businesses. You can get more information about my background and family at www.aliceforauditor.com.
WHAT COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES ARE YOU INVOLVED IN? HAVE YOU HELD LEADERSHIP POSITIONS?
I am a member of Bethelem Lutheran Church, Johnson County Farm Bureau, Johnson County Republican Women's Club, The Warrensburg Early Bird Rotary and the NFIB (National Federation of Independent Businesses). I am very active in youth sports, being a volleyball coach for the Warrensburg Parks and Recreation youth program and also was honored to be the Crest Ridge Middle School Volleyball Coach for a couple of years. I strive to be very involved with the youth in our communities through hunting and outdoor programs and encourage others to become involved and make a difference for our kids.
WHAT IS YOUR EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND?
I completed two Bachelor's Degrees in Business Administration from CMSU. My functional majors are Marketing and Public Relations, including three semesters of accounting classes while earning these degrees. I have an Associates Degree in Business Administration from Saint Paul's College (formerly in Concordia, Missouri) and graduated from Saint Paul Lutheran High School and St. Paul's Lutheran Grade School in Concordia.
WHAT IS YOUR ELECTORAL HISTORY? JOHNSON COUNTY? OTHER?
I have never run for public office before. No one asked me to run for Johnson County Auditor. I have no conflicts of interest and when elected Johnson County Auditor, I will not be controlled by any other county officials. I felt it was time for an ordinary citizen to step up to the plate and say "I have the education, the training, the experience and the ethics to run the auditor's office as it should be run: independently, honestly, fairly and professionally."
HOW MANY YEARS HAVE YOU LIVED IN JOHNSON COUNTY? WHAT TOWN?
I am the sixth generation of my family born in Johnson County. My great, great, great grandfather, Robert Burns Craig is listed in the History of Johnson County as one of the earliest settlers of the county in 1836. My mother, Mary Ann (McCannon) Pfannkuch was raised in Knob Noster. Her family later moved to Warrensburg where she worked in the Town & Country Shoe Factory and where she met my father, James Pfannkuch of rural Concordia. I was born in Johnson County Memorial Hospital (now known as Western Missouri Medical Center) and was raised in Concordia, Missouri. I lived in Warrensburg while attending CMSU and moved here permanently in 1996 when I met and married my husband Mark Mistler. We have always lived in the country near Warrensburg and Centerview.
WHAT MAKES WARRENSBURG WORK?
Warrensburg, just like the entire county, has an excellent variety of skilled and intelligent people who readily volunteer their time and energy to get things done. Warrensburg has a very involved city government and various commissions and departments to keep the city running smoothly. The Warrensburg Parks and Recreation Department, the Fire Department, Police Department and Street Maintenance crews all are very dedicated and professional individuals who serve Warrensburg proudly. The Warrensburg Area Chamber of Commerce and Warrensburg Main Street also work very hard to make Warrensburg a great place to live and do business. Warrensburg, as well as the entire county, has excellent school systems and teachers. I applaud their hard work and commitment.
Johnson County also has many individuals who work very hard to keep things going. All of the courthouse employees, Highway Department, Highway Patrol and Law Enforcement Officials give countless time and energy to protect and preserve our right as citizens of our county.
But the most important factor in what makes Warrensburg work is the enthusiastic people who care about the community and give their time and energy to make it a thriving and growing city. I see that same work ethic and enthusiasm throughout our county.
WHAT DOES WARRENSBURG NEED?
I would like to see the county, including Warrensburg, continue to work hard to expand economic development and business growth. But I would also like to see the county develop and implement a plan to help the small businesses that are already here to grow and expand. Our home grown businesses (including farmers) are the life blood of this county and have been essential in making our county as prosperous and strong as it is today.
WHAT CAN YOU DO FOR WARRENSBURG? HOW WILL YOU GET THIS DONE FOR WARRENSBURG?
The office I am running for is Johnson County Auditor. Warrensburg is the county seat and a significant part of the county, but our county is very large and still growing and has many needs to be addressed. As your Johnson County Auditor, my main responsibilities as set forth by the Missouri Revised Statutes are to set up an accounting system for the county which will give a full and accurate accounting of all county funds and assets including payroll, prepare and keep the budget information current, pay the bills in a timely fashion and audit the accounts and payables of all the county officials.
I have practical experience in all phases of this position. I have analyzed both large and small businesses and set up appropriate accounting systems for them. I have set up and worked many budgets, including my own two businesses, and am very experienced in handling payables from multiple accounts. I have set up and utilized payables tracking systems to ensure that bills are being paid on time and the business is not incurring late fees or finance charges. I have audited accounting systems and have caught and stopped employee theft and embezzlement of funds. Through my work with Long and Edmunds, CPA's of Warrensburg, I have produced payroll for numerous businesses, including monthly, quarterly and annual reporting of withholdings. I firmly believe that in order to audit the county payroll, our auditor should know what they are looking at.
As your Johnson County Auditor, I promise all the citizens of this county that monthly and annual financial statements will be on time and balanced to the penny. Budget information will be timely and available to not only the county officials, but to the public. Our county officials will be held accountable for the funds that they spend, and our citizens will be encouraged and welcomed to study the information. I will help our county by simply doing the job as outlined by our Missouri State Statutes.
DO YOU HAVE PETS AND WHAT ARE THEIR NAMES?
My family has several pets: One tame cat (MandM), a barn cat with kittens which we can't get near so they have no names, two dogs (Kelly Ann and Bud), and a horse (Babe). We also raise sheep and currently have a flock of 12 ewes and a ram. Plus we have a goat (Tripod). My 4 year old daughter also recently got a bunny which she named Soapy.
STATEMENT:
I plan to bring professionalism and courtesy to the Johnson County Auditor's office. As public officials, we are there to work for and serve all the residents of our county. I will bring trustworthiness, respect and common sense to our Auditor's office. As your Johnson County Auditor I will implement changes to our accounting procedures which will ensure that all funds and expenditures will be accounted for and appropriate. I will follow the Missouri Revised Statutes to the letter. I will use my accounting experience to implement money saving procedures for the county. I am a very hardworking person who has the ethics and the honesty to serve all the citizens of Johnson County as we should be served, with leadership, experience, honesty and fairness. I would appreciate your support and your vote on Tuesday, August 8, 2006.
