Soccer Tigers Top St. Pius X in Opener

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The 2006 high school boys' soccer season is off to a good start for Warrensburg. The Tigers opened Tuesday with a 2-1 victory over St. Pius X.

WHS carried the play, but it was the Warriors who struck first. Tommy Calia scored in the 27th minute to put St. Pius ahead 1-0.

About three minutes later, Chuck Bralick tied it for the Tigers. Alex Karscig picked up the assist on the play and the teams went into the locker room tied 1-1 at the intermission.

Warrensburg took the lead in the 56th minute. Nico Monetti found the back of the net off an an assist from Bralick and the Tigers made the one-goal lead stand up.

"This was a good win to get the season started," said WHS head coach Matthew Bax. "Playing the defending conference champions at their place is a tough way to start the year. The guys played well. They moved the ball with short, quick passes and took advantage of the room and superior numbers in the central midfield.

"There were plenty of times in which we dominated play by controlling the ball. The three in the back (Tanner Pearce, Bobby Nelson, and Nathan White) did an excellent job of thwarting any St. Pius attack and allowing our midfield to work the ball into the attack. There are some little things we need to work on, but the season is long and there is time."

WHS out shot St. Pius 22-10 and held a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks.

The Tigers have two more tough road tests ahead in this weekend's Moberly Shootout. WHS will play West Plains Friday and Ozark Saturday.

"This weekend should be a great challenge for us," Bax said. "We play the largest school in our class, West Plains, and a school from the larger class in Ozark. Neither team is in our district or conference, so while it will be a test for us, the outcomes are not as important as our level of play."

Warrensburg faces West Plains at 7 p.m. Friday, then must rebound quickly to play Ozark at 9 a.m. Saturday.
