Jennies set to open MIAA season with doubleheader against Truman State

WARRENSBURG, Mo. -- The Jennies softball team opens its home and conference season today after a strong showing at the Missouri Western Invitational last weekend.

The Central Missouri Jennies went 4-1 over the weekend at the Missouri Western Invitational. The weekend was highlighted by a 4-1 upset of 15th-ranked Minnesota State-Mankato on Saturday.

UCM opened the tournament with a 6-5 win over Wayne State (Neb.). Sophomore Tarese Ely-Myers led the Jennies with three RBI, while Kristal Holland picked up the win and Megan Leonard got the save.

The Jennies pounded out 11 hits in a 10-0, five inning win over Concordia-St. Paul in game two. Ely-Myers was 3-for-4 with a home run and five RBI to lead UCM. Tracey Anderson also homered for the Jens. Leonard threw five innings of one-hit ball with 12 strikeouts to earn her sixth win of the season.

UCM allowed five runs in the top of the seventh and fell 6-5 to University of Mary (N.D.). Marisha Branson and Katie Bauer had two hits apiece to pace UCM.

The Jennies responded Saturday morning with a 4-1 upset of 15th-ranked Minnesota State-Mankato. Leonard went 1-for-2 at the plate with two RBI, while striking out 15 in seven innings to get the win. She allowed just one run on two hits for win number seven.

UCM ended the tournament with an 11-6 win over Upper Iowa. The Jennies pounded out 16 hits, Melissa Palmer, Kelli Kurka and Ely-Myers had three hits apiece for UCM. The Jennies trailed 6-1 after two innings, but a nine-run sixth inning vaulted UCM in front for good.

For the weekend, Ely-Myers finished 10-for-18 with three home runs and 12 RBI. Leonard went 2-0 in the circle with one save and 32 strikeouts in 19 innings of work.
