ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP)--With many shoppers planning to scale back this holiday season, businesses in St. Joseph are giving people a reason to spend their dollars locally--a chance to win $10,000.

That's the grand prize in the third annual Shop St. Joseph program, organized by the Chamber of Commerce. The chamber says 45 merchants have signed up, paying $200 to $250 apiece to take part.

Shoppers who visit participating stores through Dec. 20 get a ticket to enter the drawing. The winning ticket will be drawn Dec. 21.

Eisenberg's Better Living sells small appliances, such as vacuum cleaners and sewing machines. Owner Scott Eisenberg says he's taking part in the Shop St. Joseph program, hoping to give shoppers one more reason to visit his store.
