KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP)--The Kansas City Ballet has started a $31 million renovation on what officials are calling "one of the best dance buildings in the country."

The Kansas City Star reports the ballet is renovating the dilapidated historic structure at Union Station Power House. The new Todd Bolender Center for Dance and Creativity is scheduled to be finished in 2011.

The center is scheduled to open around the same time as the new $405 million Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts.

The 60,000-square-foot brick building will feature seven rehearsal studios and a 180-seat theater for some performances.

It's been 3¬Ω years since the ballet decided on the site for its new center, located new Union Station and the Liberty Memorial.

"This will say a lot about the city's place in the arts," said Jeffrey J. Bentley, the ballet's executive director.
