WARRENSBURG, Mo.--Numerous parents and teachers are all too familiar with the statement, “I’m bored. There’s nothing to do!”

Many teenagers are bored because have no idea what is going on in their community. They just sit around texting, playing videogames or obsessively checking their Twitter or Facebook accounts.

However, Warrensburg offers teens some ways to escape their boredom, at least for a little while. Some of the most teen-friendly and cost-effective ways to spend a hot summer day are at the UCM bowling alley, the Carmike Cinema movie theater, the Nassif Auqatic center or the skate park.

The movie theater offers a special called “Recession Tuesday,” which offers $1 popcorn and soda. The skate park is free to the public, and the only rule is that all skaters must wear helmets. The Nassif Aquatic center hours are 1 to 7 p.m., daily.

The UCM bowling alley’s summer hours are Sunday through Friday, noon to 10 p.m. and Friday and Saturday, noon to midnight. Also, the bowling alley has GLO-BOWL! Friday and Saturday, 9 pm to midnight, and $1 bowling Monday through Friday, noon to 2 p.m. and Wednesday 9 p.m. to midnight.

Allison Ovitt, 16, has recently moved to Warrensburg from St. Genevieve, and is excited that she can still participate as a competitive gymnast, or, “maybe, just coach.” Even though the move has made her feel like her “life is over,” Allison believes she could make some new friends at the gym or at her new high school.

Lexi Tyler, 11, is a participant in the Summer Day Camp provided by Warrensburg Parks and Recreation. She loves the summer program because it has “really fun crafts and a lot of sports.” Lori Evans, recreation coordinator, says the camp offers a variety of summertime activities, such as going to “Science City, the Royals stadium and CoCo Key, an indoor water park.”

As much fun as Lexi has at camp, she does wish Warrensburg had an “ice skating rink; that’s cool. Or we should have at least one campsite with horseback riding. Kids would really like that idea, and parents, too.”

Caleb Neumann, 16, lives on Whiteman Air Force Base, so he has to travel to Warrensburg to see a movie, go skating, or bowling with his mom and sister. Caleb says there is “virtually nothing to do in Knob Noster,” so he spends most of his summer “playing games and being online.”

He is active in the Knob Noster marching band. The band travels every summer. “We go to Worlds of Fun every year, but every two years, we go to either Branson or St. Louis.”
