KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP)--The director of a New York City museum has been named director of Kansas City's Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City.

The appointment of Julian Zugazagoitia (SZU'-ga-sa-GOY'-tee-ah) was announced Friday.

He succeeds Marc Wilson, who retires in June. Wilson has led the Nelson for nearly 30 years and through several major changes, including the addition of its $95 million Bloch Building.

A native of Mexico City, Zugazagoitia has been director and CEO of the Museo del Barrio in Manhattan for the past seven years. He has also been executive assistant to the director at the Guggenheim Museum in New York.

Trustees of the Nelson-Atkins said Zugazagoitia was their unanimous choice.
