WARRENSBURG, Mo. -– The Central Missouri Jennies soccer team was picked to finish second in the 2008 MIAA preseason coaches’ poll released Wednesday. The Jens tallied 54 points and three first-place votes in the nine-team conference race.
Central Missouri won the school’s first conference title last season with a 10-3-1 conference record. UCM returns eight starters from last season’s squad that finished the season 13-4-4 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament.
The already tough MIAA got even tougher with the addition of Nebraska-Omaha. The Mavericks won the National Title in 2005 and advanced to the national quarterfinals a year ago. UNO was tabbed as the preseason favorite, garnering 60 points (four first-place votes).
Co-conference champion Truman nearly tied the Jennies for second, but came in at third with 53 points (two first-place votes) followed by Washburn (47 points) in fourth and Southwest Baptist (34 points) in fifth.
Coaches ranked the teams in the order they expected them to finish. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own team. Points were awarded on an 8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 basis.
