Jennies open conference play with 69-60 win over SBU

WARRENSBURG, Mo. – The Central Missouri Jennies basketball team defeated Southwest Baptist, 69-60, in the conference home opener tonight at the Multipurpose Building.

The Jennies improved to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in the MIAA, and SBU fell to 1-5 overall and 0-1 in league action.

Southwest Baptist got out to a quick 7-0 lead before Danielle Shows put the Jennies on the board with a layup at the 17 minute mark. The Bearcats stretched their lead to nine at 14:30 before Central Missouri started to chip away.

Shows made a layup at 7:23 of the first half to give the Jennies their first lead of the game at 19-18, and SBU would never regain the lead again. Central Missouri went up by as many as seven points twice in the stanza as the Jennies carried a 34-27 lead into halftime.

Coming out of the locker rooms, UCM stretched its lead to 12 points on a 3-pointer by Deidra Dace at 14:24. Rebecca Roberts hit a layup and was fouled on the play at 12:41 to give the Jennies a 15-point lead of 48-33 after the three-point play.

Central Missouri had its biggest lead of 17 at 5:32 after a free throw by Roberts and again at 4:44 on a 3-pointer by Brittney Slifer. The Bearcats came to within 10 points just under two minutes before Meghan Waggoner was fouled and stretched UCM’s lead to 12 by nailing two free throws. SBU’s Ashleigh Gallio ended the game hitting a 3-pointer to get the Bearcats to within nine points, their closest margin since the beginning of the half.

Southwest Baptist’s leading scorers were Gallio, 13 points, Jasmine Sanford, 11 points, and Courtney Heady, 10 points.

Roberts recorded her second double-double of the season collecting 19 points and bringing down 10 boards. Others with double figures were Shows with 14 points and Slifer with 11.

Central Missouri will return to the hardwood on Saturday, Dec. 5 when the Jennies host Missouri Southern. Tip-off will be at 1:30 p.m. from the Multipurpose Building.
