Jennies beat Washburn in OT, 79-77

TOPEKA, Kan. -– The Central Missouri Jennies scored the final eight points in overtime and sophomore guard Kara Fleming hit a jumper with 1.4 seconds remaining to upset second-ranked Washburn 79-77 at Lee Arena Saturday night.
It was Washburn's first loss of the season.
The Jennies (9-3, 4-1 MIAA) trailed 77-71 with 2:25 to play in the extra period before making their final run to pull off the upset.
The win was the first for UCM in Topeka since a 66-50 decision Feb. 16, 2000.
Trailing 77-71, Fleming started the run with a jumper to draw UCM within four. Senior guard Dominica Blakemore hit a jumper to pull the game to 77-75, and after the Jens forced a turnover, junior guard Deidra Dace hit a runner in the lane to tie the game at 77 with 45 seconds remaining.
Another Washburn turnover with 26 ticks on the clock set up the final play for UCM.
The Jennies were led in scoring by senior forward Katy Davenport and junior guard Brittney Slifer, with 20 points apiece, career-highs for both players. Fleming added 12, while Dace chipped in nine with a team-high seven rebounds.
Washburn (12-1, 5-1 MIAA) was led by senior guard Janice Bright who poured in a career-high 26 points. The only other Lady Blue in double figures was senior guard Jessica Mainz with 10.
Washburn jumped out to an early 6-0 lead before Dace notched the Jens’ first bucket nearly five minutes into the game. The lead was 9-2 before a quick 6-0 run by UCM cut the lead to one at 9-8. The Lady Blues led by as many as eight in the late stages of the first half, but a 15-5 run by UCM gave the Jens a 34-32 lead with under a minute to play in the half.
A three pointer by Bright near the end of the period sent Washburn into the intermission with a 35-34 lead.
The game see-sawed back and forth throughout much of the second half, with neither team able to grab control. Washburn led by seven midway through the second half, but a 21-6 run by UCM gave the Jennies their biggest lead of the night at 65-57 with 4:38 remaining.
The Lady Blues closed the second half on a 9-1 run, and a missed jumper at the buzzer by UCM sent the game to an extra period tied at 66.
The game was knotted at 71 with four minutes left in overtime when Washburn went on a 6-0 run to open a 77-71 lead with 2:25 to play.
The win gives UCM back-to-back wins over Washburn for the first time since 2001-2002.
The Jennies return to action Wednesday when they travel to Hays, Kan., for a 5:30 p.m. game with Fort Hays State in Gross Memorial Coliseum.
