ALBUQUERQUE, N. M. – University of Central Missouri track & field sent 14 athletes to Albuquerque for the NCAA National Championships. Darius Walker won a national championship for UCM while setting a school record in the heptathlon (5,377 pts). The Mules finished fifth in team scoring for the second year in a row. The Jennies improved one spot over last year to finish in 12th place.
Six of the seven Mules competing in the event earned All-America status. Junior defending national champ Drew Frizzell threw a personal best (70-00.25) and school record in the weight throw finals. Despite the personal best, eight and a quarter inches separated Frizzell from the top of the podium. In his second event of the weekend Frizzell earned All-America status in the shot put with a throw of 58-06.75, the best of his career and the third-longest throw in school history.
Brent Vogel and Shawn Boss were also All-Americans in the heptathlon placing fourth (5,129) and sixth (5,003) respectively.
The highly touted Mules 4x400 relay team of Walker, Anthony Cooper, Vogel, and Kai Roper took second place.
Two Jennies earned All-American. Lindsay Lettow turned in a pair of All-American performances. In the Pentathlon she fell just shy of a title, taking second place (3,924) and the most points of any Jenny in the process. Then the sophomore turned in a 7th place finish in the 60 meter hurdles (8.75).
Again a UCM field athlete had a better showing than the previous year and finished lower. Kayla Muyskens threw 48-05.25, just short of her personal best (48-06.75) and took 5th place.
