Softball Jennies drop a pair at Arkansas Tech

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark.)–- After dropping a pair of games on Saturday to Henderson State (1-0 and 7-1), the Central Missouri Jennies softball team came back on Sunday and fell in a pair to Arkansas Tech, 9-0 and 10-7, at Chartwells Complex in Russellville, Ark.
Leading the way for the Jennies in the two games Saturday were Brandi Campbell and Kasey Martin, both going 3-for-5. Ashlea Bengtson also had three hits on the day, and she scored once. Campbell had a team-high tying 1.000 slugging percentage with a triple, one walk and two runs scored, as she also was successful in her one steal attempt.
The Jennies (0-4) will be back in action next weekend, Feb. 12-13, when they head to Denton, Texas, to participate in the Texas Woman’s Tournament. Central Missouri is scheduled to play Texas A&M-Kingsville, Midwestern State and the host Pioneers in the two-day tournament.
Game 1: UCM loses 9-0
Arkansas Tech scored three runs in the first inning, followed by two runs each in the second, third and fourth frames, as the game was called in the fifth.
The Golden Suns’ Taylor Gates doubled to right-center field with the bases loaded in the bottom of the first inning which scored two runs and would become the winning hit for ATU. Roxie Palacios later scored in the frame on a fielding error by the Jennies.
In the second inning, after getting the first two batters out, Central Missouri’s pitcher Sarah Espy walked a batter, then gave up a double and single that put the Golden Suns up by a 5-0 score.
With a runner on first base and two outs, Dana Stephenson singled through the left side of the field in the third frame that give ATU another run before scoring herself on a single down the left field line.
After walking a batter with the bases loaded and giving up a hit, Central Missouri saw themselves down 9-0 going into the top of the fifth inning in need of some runs.
The Jennies' best scoring opportunity was in the second inning, when Kelli Kurka started things off with a double. She was moved over to third base two batters later but UCM was unable to bring her in.
Espy recorded the loss for the Jennies, as she went 1.2 innings, giving up five runs, two earned, on four hits while striking out two. Megan Schallom came on in relief for UCM, going 2.1 innings and giving up four runs, while striking out one.
Game 2: ATU 10, UCM 7
After being down 6-0 heading into the top of the fourth inning, the Central Missouri offense finally got hot. With runners on second and third, Krista Cummings singled to right field for the Jennies' first run of the day. Arkansas Tech got the second out of the frame as Kurka came to the plate with two runners on, clearing them with her first home run of the season and put the Jennies to within two runs.
Arkansas Tech answered in the bottom half of the fourth inning with three runs of their own to put the score at 9-4. The Golden Suns manufactured those three runs on a bunt single, fielder’s choice and a ground out.
Central Missouri fought back to get one run in each of the last three innings. In the fifth, the Jennies scored on a fielding error by ATU. The sixth inning, Chelsey Patton singled to center field with two runners on for an RBI. The seventh inning started with a triple by Campbell as she came around on a groundout.
The Jennies outhit Arkansas Tech in the game 14-11, but committed two errors to the Golden Suns one.
Jamin Landreth recorded the loss, pitching 3.1 innings in the circle. She gave up nine runs, seven earned, off nine hits while striking out two batters. Schallom pitched 2.2 innings of relief, allowing one earned run on two hits while striking out one.
