WARRENSBURG, Mo.--UCM senior forward Sanijay Watts was named the 2010 Daktronics South Central Region Men’s Basketball Player of the Year Wednesday, while senior guard Alex Moosmann was also named to the first-team.
Watts led the MIAA in scoring (21.0 ppg) and rebounding (9.6), as well as double-doubles (15). He was one of two players who were repeat first-team selections (Matt Rogers of Southwest Baptist).
He became the first Mule since Tyrone Latimer in 1995 to be named the MIAA Player of the Year as well. He was selected MIAA Player of the Week a league-high four times, and was named the Division II Bulletin National Player of the Month for February. Watts, a St. Louis native, was named to the MIAA first-team in 2008-09 as well.
Moosmann, from Washington, Mo., earned his second all-region pick after being named second-team last season. Also a first-team All-MIAA selection, he leads all of college basketball (NCAA Divisions I, II, and III) in assist-to-turnover ratio at 4.6 (111-to-24), playing 32 minutes per game at point guard. He also ranks ninth in the MIAA with 15.4 points per game, and leads the conference in three-point shooting at .458.
Both Watts and Moosmann are now eligible for All-American status. The Daktronics All-American team will be voted upon by the sports information directors of Division II men’s basketball playing schools.
The Mules will start NCAA Tournament play Saturday as the No. 2 seed in the South Central Region, and will face seventh-seeded Missouri Western at 2:30 p.m. in Wichita Falls, Texas.
