UCM Joins nationwide RecycleMania competition
Jan 28, 2010, 7:16 AM
WARRENSBURG, Mo.-– The University of Central Missouri is joining the ranks of colleges and universities around the globe as a participant in RecycleMania, a friendly competition and benchmarking tool for college and university recycling programs to promote waste
reduction activities to their campus communities.
During a 10-week period ending March 27, participating schools will
report data regarding on-campus recycling programs. These programs then
are ranked, according to which collect more recyclables per capita, more
total recyclables, less trash per capita, or which have the higher
recycling rates. With each week’s reports and rankings, participating
schools can watch how their results fluctuate in comparison to other schools
and use this to rally their campus communities to reduce waste and
recycle more.
Beginning Jan. 29, data will be posted weekly at www.recyclemaniacs.org.
UCM’s campus recycling program was kicked off during the summer of
2009 by UCM students Manny Abarca and Nick McDaniels.
What started as a pilot program on the central campus has been expanded into the residence
halls and other campus buildings. The campus set a record
for the week of Jan. 18-22, recycling 7.98 tons of materials, exceeding
the average of 4 to 5 tons per week.
