WARRENSBURG, Mo. -– Student-athletes from the University of Central Missouri will begin their annual visits to Warrensburg elementary schools over the next three weeks, promoting the importance of reading skills to young students.

The Mules’ and Jennies’ “Literacy Team” is scheduled to begin the annual program with a visit to Ridge View Elementary on Wednesday, Oct. 8. Other visits are planned on Thursday, Oct. 9 at Martin Warren Elementary; Thursday, Oct. 16 at Southeast Elementary; and on Wednesday, Oct. 22 at Sterling Elementary. At each of the school visits, teams of Mules’ and Jennies’ student-athletes will read newly purchased books to the young students.

The new books, selected by the librarians at the elementary schools, are purchased in conjunction with the literacy program. Funds to purchase the new books are being provided through the Carol Hughes Memorial Fund at the University of Central Missouri, with additional funding provided by many of the UCM Athletic sponsors, including First Central Bank, DQ Grill-N-Chill, Western Missouri Medical Center, Mr. Goodcents Subs & Pastas, Farm & Home, and J.W. Franklin Company.

The Literacy Team program was initiated in the fall of 1992 and is designed to provide interaction between Mules’ and Jennies’ student-athletes and local youngsters with the focus on reading skills.
