UCM, facing impending budget cuts, will drop one college, 8 academic departments by July

WARRENSBURG, Mo.—The University of Central Missouri will eliminate one of its five colleges, and eight of its 33 academic departments by next July, if the plan announced Thursday is approved by the Board of Governors.

These reductions will generate a savings of more than $612,000, Provost George Wilson said in his report.

Under this plan, some academic departments will be clustered into a school, to “promote interaction of related programs, enhance academic collaboration and to raise the visibility of these programs to potential students and the public,” Wilson said.

One of these new units will be the School of Performing Arts, which will include the departments of music; theatre and dance; and art and design. This school will remain part of the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences.

Other departments in this college will include English and philosophy; history and anthropology—and possible geography; government and international studies (political science and modern languages); psychology, sociology and religious studies; and communication.

The College of Education will have four departments—educational foundations and literacy; elementary and early childhood; educational leadership and human development; and career and technology education.

The Harmon College of Business and Professional Studies will have seven departments—the school of business administration will include the departments of economics and management; accounting and information systems; and marketing and finance.

The School of Professional Studies in the Harmon College will include the departments of aviation; professional services (social work, hotel and restaurant management); recreation and tourism; and crisis and disaster management; and the departments of criminal justice and military science.

Under the College of Health, Science and Technology will be six departments--the School of Applied Health Sciences; the department of nursing and communication disorders; and the department of nutrition and health (dietetics, medical technology, health studies, athletic training and kinesiology).

Also in that college will be the department of biology and earth science; the department of environmental sciences and natural resources (agriculture, chemistry, safety science and, perhaps, geography, which also could be part of a department of history and anthropology).

The School of Technology will continue to include the department of mathematics, computer science and physics.

In early November, some of these programs had been designated for elimination, including tourism, general recreation, earth science and geography, but some of these programs have been folded into allied programs.

The changes will eliminate eight departmental chair positions. They will also result in the elimination of seven office professional positions, including one currently vacant.
