WHS, other area football programs to face new district competition in 2010

Whoever takes the helm of Warrensburg High School’s football program in the fall will face an entirely new cast of district competition in Missouri’s Class 4.

The Missouri State High School Activities Association, which makes new district assignments every two years, has placed Warrensburg in Class 4 District 12 for the 2010-2011 cycle with teams from Marshall, Bolivar and Helias High School in Jefferson City.

For the past two years, the Tigers had competed in a Class 4 district with Grain Valley, Harrisonville and traditional rival Smith-Cotton. Warrensburg was outscored by a total of 131-38 in losing all three district games in 2009.

It was a challenging district in 2009, and things have not gotten easier for the Tigers with the 2010 draw. Helias was a state finalist in 2009, and finished 14-1 for the season after losing 27-15 to Kearney in the Class 4 title game. Bolivar was a Class 4 quarterfinalist with an 11-2 record.

Warrensburg finished with a 4-6 record in 2009. The program is looking for a new coach after Wiley Meade resigned in late January.

Other district assignments
In Class 3, Holden, a district champion in 2009, joins Clinton, Nevada and Pleasant Hill in District 12 for 2010. Nevada is the lone newcomer to the district, replacing Oak Grove.

In Class 2, Knob Noster will compete in District 14 with Carrollton, Lafayette County and St. Paul Lutheran of Concordia. St. Paul Lutheran replaces Lexington. Lexington and Carrollton were the district’s two playoff representatives last season.

In Class 1, Crest Ridge will compete against three new district foes in District 6. The Cougars will compete against Santa Fe, Sweet Springs and Concordia – all three of whom are also I-70 conference opponents.

Like Warrensburg, both Knob Noster and Crest Ridge were winless in district games last season.

In 8-man football, Chilhowee will compete in District 4 versus Hardin-Central, Miami, Norborne and Northwest. Norborne, Miami and Hardin-Central each earned victories versus Chilhowee in 2009. Northwest of Hughesville, Mo. will be in its first year of 8-man football after competing as a Class 1 11-man program in prior years.
