Holden driver dies in head-on crash on MO 58

HOLDEN, Mo.--A Holden driver was killed Saturday afternoon in a head-on collision on MO 58 at County Road VV.

Trooper B.R. Peters of the Missouri Highway Patrol said John L. Silverthorn, 67, of Holden, was taken to Western Missouri Medical Center in Warrensburg, where he died about an hour after the crash.

Silverthorn was southbound on Route 58, when an oncoming vehicle driven by John R. Racy, 48, of Centerview, crossed the center line and hit Silverthorn's car head-on.

Johnson County Sheriff's deputies assisted with the investigation, which is continuing.

John Lee Silverthorn was born Feb. 10, 1945, in Yale, Mich., son of Floyd and Beulah Irene (Barr) Silverthorn. He moved with his family to Holden at the age of five. He graduated from Holden High School and attended Central Missouri State College in Warrensburg.

John was a farmer. He also developed South Ridge Subdivision in Holden. He enjoyed collecting antiques, including guns and pocket watches, among other things. He was a member of Community of Christ Church. John also served on several local boards through the years, among them Friends of the Library, Board of Public Works and Holden Sesquicentennial Celebration.

His memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, April 28, 2012, at Community of Christ Church in Holden, with Warren Stowell officiating.

There will be a private interment in Fairview Cemetery in Holden at a later date.
