Care Connection celebrating ‘Masters in Aging’

September 28, 2017 @ 8:00 am - 1:00 pm

Care Connection for Aging Services will be celebrating National Senior Center Month at its Warrensburg Senior Center Sept. 28, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. culminating in participation in a community Senior Health Fair from.

The Warrensburg Senior Center is celebrating the vital community resources it provides as the city’s “Master of Aging,” this year’s national theme. From financial planning and art classes to dances and technology lessons, the Warrensburg center has become a community nexus where seniors find friendship, meaning, and purpose.

To celebrate,  Care Connection Johnson County Services Director Melissa Gower has requested that the Warrensburg City Council declare September to be Senior Center Month at its Sept. 11 meeting. In addition, the center is inviting county and state officials to help deliver meals to the homebound and to visit the center on Sept. 15, which has been dubbed Senior Advocacy Day.

Care Connection’s Johnson County Care Manager Laura Miles will provide information about the importance of falls prevention; the availability of the pharmaceutical and medication management services for people with low vision or blindness; and the benefits of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program for older Americans at the health fair.

“Today’s seniors aren’t looking to slow down,” Gower said. “They want to make new friends, learn new skills, and remain relevant in the community. We support their curiosity and growth through fun and engaging programs, while also providing practical tools and resources to help them stay healthy and independent.”

Among the programs offered at the center this year were a container gardening program, exercise classes, dances, birthday parties and a Fit and Fun event to get seniors up and moving.

This year’s national theme, “Senior Centers: Masters of Aging,” emphasizes the knowledge and experience senior centers bring to communities, including programming that empowers older adults to be strong, confident, and independent.

The center enlightens participants by broadening their horizons to new choices and adventures; engages those seeking a welcoming space and an opportunity to develop friendships; and enriches participants.
