Grant helps city expand tree survey

(WARRENSBURG, Mo.) – The tree counting will continue.

The Missouri Department of Conservation recently awarded the city a Tree Resource Improvement and Maintenance – or TRIM – grant, according to a news release. The grant covers the second phase of a citywide tree inventory.

The City Council on Sept. 10 approved an ordinance entering into an agreement with the Department of Conservation to receive the grant funds.

The first phase of the inventory took place early this year and included much of the central part of Warrensburg. Phase two will cover the remainder of the streets in Warrensburg. The inventory includes public trees within 10 feet of the edge of a street, according to the news release.

The city will issue a request for proposals to area and statewide tree service companies with expertise in urban tree inventories. After the contractor is selected, the Warrensburg Tree Board will host a public meeting to inform citizens about the inventory process and answer questions about the inventory.  Information from the Missouri Department of Conservation about proper selection, planting, pruning and mulching of trees will also be available at this meeting.

The inventory will reveal the diversity of species on city property, which will help the Tree Board and city staff to better plan for any future planting. Additionally, the inventory will provide information about hazard trees and prioritize them for removal. Finally, the inventory will set the stage for a long-term tree management plan, according to the news release.
