Jennies and Mules finish 1st and 2nd respectively in UCM Track Invitational

(WARRENSBURG, Mo.) – Competing in their first team meets of the 2014-15 season, the Mules and Jennies track teams had a great deal of success at the UCM Invitational at the Multipurpose Building. As a team, the Jennies finished tops overall with 144 points. The Mules fell two points behind team champions Emporia State with 113 points.

There were a number of standout individual performances from both squads, highlighted by Division II National champion, junior Heavin Warner. Warner set a new school and building record in the weight throw. Her toss of 20.83m (68′ 4.25″) is currently the second best mark in Division II and an automatic qualifier for the national meet. Warner was just getting warmed up though, as she also hit a provisional qualifying mark shortly after in the shot put. Warner picked up her second win of the meet, throwing a personal-best 14.18 (46′ 6.25″), the second-best mark in UCM history.

Warner wasn’t the only UCM thrower to qualify for nationals. Sophomore Jacob Mahin threw a provisional mark 16.44m (53′ 11.25″) in the shot put and finished second. Junior Caniggia Raynor won the weight throw with a toss of 20.41m (66′ 11.5″) to provisionally qualify for the national meet. This is Raynor’s first meet with the Mules and his mark is the second-best all-time.

Freshman Erika Kinsey etched her name in the UCM record books and provisionally qualified in both the long and triple jumps. Kinsey took home both events, setting a school record in the triple jump with a leap of 12.44 (40′ 9.75″). She also won the long jump with the second farthest jump in UCM history, 5.91m (19’4.75″), just 1.25″ off of the program record.

The Mules completed the long jump sweep, as George Charalambous was the winner on the men’s side with a jump of 6.97m (22′ 10.5″). Nick Ramirez finished in third for the Mules in his first meet at UCM, jumping 6.76m (22′ 2.25″).

Ramirez wasn’t finished though. In the triple jump, the sophomore jumped a provisional qualifying distance of 14.32m (46’11.75″). Fellow triple jumper, junior Andre Wooten, also provisionally qualified for the national meet. He finished third in the event, jumping and indoor personal-best 14.42m (47’3.75″).

On the track, Both the Mules and Jennies picked up points in the 60m hurdles. Zoe Sharplin won the event with a D-2 provisional time of 8.78. Madison Smith (8.90), Victoria Jackson (8.95) and Nikki Douglas (9.02) finished second-through-fourth.

The Mules also had two athletes in the finals as Tyler Chancellor (8.46) and Hassan Ilyas (9.15) finished in fourth and sixth place, respectively.

In the sprints, Douglas (7.78) and Sharplin (7.94) doubled up on their finals appearances by finishing second and third respectively in the 60m dash. For the Mules, Marquis Jones took home fourth place honors in 6.97.

Kailey Fuchs and Michael Lockhart earned top-five finishes for the UCM in the 400m. Fuchs finished in second place with a PR 58.50. Lockhart’s time of 49.87 was good for third place.

Kellin Loch was the winner in the men’s 600 yard run. He set a new personal-best with a time of 1:11.75.

UCM swept the 3,000m run with Megan Glamann and Ben Barrows picking up wins. Barrows ran a personal-best 8:48.65 while Glamann conquered the field with a time of 10:28. While in the women’s mile, senior Allie Rexroat finished in third place with a time of 5:25.71.

Both squads also left their mark in the relays. The men’s 4x400m team of Jones, Chancellor, Lockhart and Loch came in first place in 3:23.78 while the women’s team of Douglas, Smith, Katie Cassidy and Fuchs was a close second in 4:02.33.

Both teams will be back in action next weekend, Jan. 30-31. UCM will stay at home for their second consecutive meet at the Multi, the Mule Relays. The women’s relays will take place Friday, Jan. 30 beginning at 1 p.m. while the men’s relays are Saturday, Jan. 31 and kick off at 10 a.m.
