Mules basketball drops exhibition contest to Division I Governors

(CLARKSVILLE, Tenn.) — Mules basketball fell to Division I Austin Peay 75-66 Saturday night in an exhibition game at Dave Aaron Arena.

The Mules fell behind 16-7 until the 13:24 mark when Charles Hammork scored six straight points to cut the Governors’ lead to just three, 16-13 with 12 minutes remaining in the first half.

Austin Peay got a pair of free throws after that to increase the lead to 18-13, but Dominique Long drilled a jumper to bring the Mules back within three with just over 11 minutes remaining the first half.

Reggie Stallings buried a three after a Matt Webb steal to knot the game up 18-18 at the 10:14 mark. Webb would give the Mules their first lead of the night less than a minute later when he nailed a jumper to put the Mules in front, 20-18.

That lead didn’t last long though as the Governors scored the next nine points to regain the lead, 27-20, with 5:17 to go in the half. The Mules closed the first half on a 9-2 run and briefly took a 35-33 lead before the Governors’ Will Triggs hit a jump-shot with five seconds remaining to tie the game at 35 heading into the locker room.

Hammork paced the Mules in the first half with 11 points. The Mules shot 40 percent in the opening stanza, going 12-30, but only made two three-point baskets out of ten attempted for 20 percent. Central Missouri out-rebounded Austin Peay in half number one, 15-14.

The Mules opened the second half with layup from Widgett Washington to take a 37-35 lead and extended their lead to 41-37 on layups from Long and Webb. The Governors retook the lead at the 16:55 mark on a three from Anthony Campbell.

Austin Peay extended its lead to five until 13 minutes remaining in the second half when Long drilled a three to bring the Mules within two, 50-48. Long nailed another trey just a minute-in-a-half later to put the Mules up one, 51-50.

The Governors retook the lead briefly before Webb hit a layup with 8:34 on the clock to put UCM back out in front, 55-54. The Kansas City, Mo., native hit a jumper with 7:18 remaining to give the Mules a 57-54 advantage.

The Governors answered though with a 12-0 run to take a 66-57 lead with 3:45 left in the second half. The run proved to be the difference in the game as the Mules couldn’t get any closer than six the final three minutes, sealing the 75-66 win for Austin Peay.

The Mules shot 40 percent in the contest (25-62) but just 20 percent from three (5-25) and turned the ball over 18 times, leading to 13 Governor points. Central Missouri out-rebounded Austin Peay in the contest, 34-30.

Hammork and Webb led the Mules, each scoring 15 points while Long had 14 and Lance Beckwith chipped in 10, respectively. Webb also posted a double-double after grabbing 10 boards to go along with his 15 points.
