Mules drop final exhibition game, 78-75 at Austin Peay

(CLARKSVILLE, Tenn.) — The Central Missouri Mules wrapped up the exhibition portion of their schedule with a 78-75 loss to Division I Austin Peay on Monday night at the Dunn Center. The Mules led 73-70 with just under two minutes to play, but the Governors ended the game on an 8-2 run.

The Mules (0-2 exhibition) opened an early 8-5 lead on five quick points from Daylen Robinson. UCM extended the lead to four only to see the Governors (1-0 exhibition) come right back to tie the game.

TJ White put the Mules back in front 18-16 with 9:40 to play in the first half only to see Austin Peay go on an 11-2 run to grab a 27-20 lead with 7:28 to play.

The Mules crawled back to within three at 31-28 with just over five minutes to play, but the Govs quickly pushed the lead back to eight. Central Missouri was able to cut the lead to five right before the half on a Jon Gilliam layup, but Travis Betran hit a three at the buzzer to give APSU a 43-35 lead at the intermission.

The Governors extended their lead to double digits out of the break. The lead hung around eight points through much of the early going in the second half. The lead sat at 53-45 with 14:49 to play in the game when the Mules went on a 13-2 run to grab a 58-55 lead with 9:52 to play in the game.

A quick three by Ed Dyson tied the game at 58-all and the game remained tied for nearly two minutes until a Fred Garmon layup gave APSU a 60-58 advantage at the 7:49 mark.

The Governors led 64-60 with 6:30 to play in the game, but the Mules went on a 10-2 run to grab a 70-66 lead with 3:11 to play. Gilliam hit a three to give the Mules the lead and White added to the lead with a layup.

Betran scored four straight points for Austin Peay to tie the game before Robinson gave the lead back to UCM at 73-70 with 1:42 to play. A three by Betran tied the game with 1:26 to play and Zavion Williams put APSU in the lead for good with a free throw.

Robinson led UCM with 11 points. Kyle Wolf added 10 points and nine rebounds and Gilliam also had 10 points.

Betran led four Governors in double figures with 19 points. Chris Horton had a game-high 13 rebounds.

The Mules open the regular season this Saturday and Sunday at the Sanford Pentagon Basketball Showcase in Sioux Falls, S.D. UCM will take on Northern State on Saturday at 4 p.m. and Augustana on Sunday at 4 p.m. Saturday’s game can be heard live on 1450 KOKO and warrensburgradio.com. Sunday’s game will be carried on all outlets of the UCM Sports Network.
