Jennies hit the road

Jennies basketball hits the road after going 2-0 last week with a record of 11-1 for the season for their first back to back road game trip in MIAA Conference play. The Jennies are currently 5-0 in MIAA competition and are the only unbeaten team in the MIAA this season. They are also 1-0 on the road with their only road win against Southwest Baptist 80-75 on Dec. 16. The Jennies will face the Northwest Missouri State Bearcats, who currently hold a record of 1-13 and 0-6 in the MIAA, at 5:30 pm Thursday, Jan. 11, in Maryville. Then the Jennies will head to St. Joseph to face the Missouri Western Griffons that holds a record of 10-5, and 3-3 in MIAA. That game will be at 2 pm Saturday, Jan. 13.

The Jennies defeated the Bearcats 77-40 with a 15 point, 12 rebound double-double from Kayonna Lee. They turned around to defeat the Griffons 70-48 in which four Jennies were in double figure points. The Jennies’ all time record against the Bearcats is 67-26 with 10 wins in their last 11 previous meetings, and their all time record against the Griffons is 37-29 with three straight wins in their three previous matchups.

The Jennies are 12th by the WBCA poll and have moved up two spots in the D2SIDA to 10th, which is their highest rank this season. The only other MIAA team in either poll is Central Oklahoma who is ranked 15th in the WBCA. The Jennies are currently on an 8 game winning streak and hope to continue the streak on the road in MIAA play.

Mules open up with win over Newman

Mules wrestling opened up their two matches in MIAA action with a 24-20 road win over the Newman Jets Tuesday night. Five of the Mules wrestlers scored wins as the Mules were able to pick up their third dual win this season. Leading the way for the Mules were Kaleb Warner and Jesse Reser with both wins in way by pin at 149 pounds and 165 pounds. Other Mules that were also able to claim a win were Zachary Schridde, Allan Pearson and Dominique Hampton to secure the overall for the dual win.

The night began with both teams opening up at 125 pounds. The Mules forfeited at 133 pounds which gave the Newman Jets a 6-0 lead. That lead did not last long as the Jets forfeited the next match as Zachary Schridde earned the win at 141 pounds to make it a 6-6 tie. The Mules were able to get their first lead when Kaleb Warner at 149 pounds with the pin over Jets’ Jake Hattabaugh in 4:27. With a 12-6 lead, the Jets decided to keep the action intense when Dominic Nobile dropped a 14-3 decision to Miguel Rodriguez at 157 pounds. At the midway point, the Mules had a slight lead 12-10 over Newman.

The Mules finally gained their first double digit lead when their next two weight classes won. At 165 pounds, Jesse Reser pinned his opponent, Kyle Ryan, in 4:49 to give the Mules a 18-10 lead. Allan Pearson was able to keep the Mules on track with a tough 9-8 decision at 174 pounds over Nate Panagakis to give the Mules a 21-10 lead with only three weight classes left.

Dominique Hampton was able to secure a win for the Mules at 197 pounds with a 11-7 decision over Jacob Stoneberger. The Mules lost the two of the last three weight classes but it was not enough for the Jets as the Mules secured a four point win.

The Mules will have a short break as the team will be back in action January 10 in Edmond, Oklahoma, to take on the 13th ranked Central Oklahoma Bronchos. Mat action will begin at 7 pm.
