Two charged in NW Mo. State student’s death

MARYVILLE, Mo. (AP) — Two men have been charged in the death of a 21-year-old Northwest Missouri State University student.

The Nodaway County prosecutor filed charges of second-degree murder and first-degree assault Friday against 23-year-old Tony Overlin and 31-year-old Kevin Dell Mooney, both of Bethany.

They were jailed on $100,000 bond, and their arraignment is scheduled for Tuesday. No attorney is listed for them in online court records.

The St. Joseph News-Press (http://bit.ly/QhHKyb ) reported that the suspects were asked to leave a Maryville bar after an altercation with Tomarken Smith of St. Louis.

Overlin and Mooney are accused of waiting until the bar closed and attacking Smith as he left the bar.

Smith died of head injuries early Friday at a hospital. He was a senior pre-professional studies major with a minor in coaching.
