UCM Literary Team school visits to get underway

Student athletes from UCM will make their annual visits to Warrensburg elementary schools during the next few weeks, promoting the importance of reading skills to young students.

The Mules and Jennies Literacy Team will open the four school tour Thursday, Sept. 28 at Martin Warren Elementary School. Other visits are scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 3 at Ridgeview Elementary, Wednesday, Oct. 18 at Maple Grove Elementary, and the final visit is Thursday, Oct. 26 at Sterling Elementary.

At each of the school visits, teams of Mules and Jennies student athletes will read newly purchased books to the young students. The new books, selected by the librarians at the elementary schools, are purchased in conjunction with the literacy program through Readers World of Warrensburg .

Funds to purchase the new books are being provided through the Eleanor G. Hughes and Carol Dyetta Hughes Literacy Program at the University of Central Missouri, with additional funding provided by the following UCM Athletic sponsors: Bi-Lo Country Mart, Central Bank, Country Kitchen, DQ Grill-n-Chill, Equity Bank, F&C Bank, J.W. Franklin Co., Jimmy John’s, Pizza Hut, Rib Crib, Rockin’ Bubbles Car Wash, Sodexo, Traditions, UCM Store, Warrensburg Collision, Western Missouri Medical Center, and Zaxby’s.

The Literacy Team program was initiated in the fall of 1992 and is designed to provide interaction between Mules and Jennies student athletes and local youngsters with the focus on reading skills.
