Theater department presents children’s show

(WARRENSBURG, Mo.) – An award-winning children’s theater production premiers at the University of Central Missouri Friday.

The UCM Department of Theatre and Dance, in collaboration with the Performing Arts Series, presents “And We Will Share The Sky” at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26, and 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27 in Hendricks Hall.

Author Donna Latham won the Theatre for Young Audiences National Playwriting Competition with this classic children’s story. The story was inspired by traditional tales from Nigeria and Senegal, sending the audience back in time when the world was new, when Brother Sun and Sister Moon lived in harmony on land, and all was good, until Sun visited the Sea and chaos ensued.

The University of Central Missouri Department of Theatre and Dance has produced children’s plays for more than 30 years. The National Playwriting Competition was established in 2001 to encourage the writings of new original works for children’s theatre productions. The winning script is awarded $1,000 and entered into the competition in the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival.

“And We Will Share The Sky” features bright costumes, talking zebras, a precocious giraffe and the important message that, no matter how different we are from one another, we all share the same good Mother Earth and that we must learn to work together and respect one another.

Tickets are $4 for children and $7 for adults and are available by calling the Performing Arts Series Box Office at 660-543-8888, and online at ucmpas.com.

Two school matinees are scheduled for 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Friday.
