Cleo Joseph Markley

Cleo Joseph Markley, 90, of Warrensburg, Missouri, died Wednesday, Feb. 7, at the Warrensburg Veterans Home.

Funeral Mass was 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 12 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Warrensburg with Father Joe Bathke officiating. Interment followed at Warrensburg Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Pallbearers were Bryan Livengood, Clint Shippy, John Parker, Adam Markley, Michael Holdinghausen, Zach Markley, Jesse Halbgewachs and Tyler Livengood.

The family received friends from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Monday at the church.

Cleo was born Feb. 21, 1927 in Warrensburg, son of William and Mary (Gudde) Markley. He attended Green Door Country School. He served in the United States Army, having achieved the rank of Buck Sergeant, in Germany from 1945 to 1946. Cleo was united in marriage to Cledys Louise Beard on Oct. 29, 1949 in Warrensburg. The couple made their home on a farm west of Warrensburg where Cleo farmed with horses back in the day. He also raised dairy cattle. He worked as a carpenter from 1954 until retiring. Cleo was a member of the Carpenter’s Union. He was an avid card player. In the earlier years, he greatly enjoyed family dinners and playing croquet on Sunday, following church.

Survivors include his wife, Cledys; six children: Ray Markley and wife, Mary Jane of Warrensburg; Charles Markley and wife, Renee of Anaheim, California; Dennis Markley and wife, Cathy of Platte City, Missouri; Diana Holdinghausen and husband, Mark of Washington, Missouri; Susan Urie and husband, Chris of Louisburg, Kansas and Ron Markley and wife, Tina of Pleasant Hill, Missouri; sister: Louise Moore of Kansas City, Missouri; brother: Phillip Markley and wife, Freda of Belton, Missouri; 14 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his grandson: Corey Urie; four brothers: Raymond, Henry, Johnny and Eugene; and two sisters: Pauline Coogan and Sister Joan Markley.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Warrensburg Veterans Home in care of Williams Funeral Chapel in Warrensburg.
