Doris Mae (Stott) Cavaness

Doris Mae (Stott) Cavaness, of Warrensburg, Missouri, died Friday, Dec. 1, at Country Club Care Center in Warrensburg.

Doris was born in New Franklin, Missouri, to Amanda and Mordaunt Stott. She grew up in Sedalia, Missouri, and graduated from Smith Cotton High School as valedictorian. She graduated from a one-year business college in Sedalia. Doris and her husband, Alan Cavaness, were married April 6, 1963. Their daughter, Holly Lynn Cavaness, was born Nov. 7, 1964. Holly succumbed to leukemia on March 12, 1970, at age 5 1/2.

Doris was a church organist at East Sedalia Baptist Church, First Christian Church in Sedalia, and First Baptist Church, First Christian Church and Cumberland Presbyterian Church, in Warrensburg.

She worked at Town & Country Shoes, in Sedalia as a customer service representative, and she shipped shoes all over the United States and Puerto Rico. She and her husband, Alan, owned and operated the DOG-N-SUDS drive-in in Warrensburg for several years. Later, Doris worked 30 years at Whiteman Air Force Base, retiring as contracting officer.

She received the distinguished U. S. Air Force award for competition in contracting in 1994. She was past president of the Business and Professional Women’s Club of Sedalia. Doris was past matron of Sedalia Chapter 57, Order of the Eastern Star, and former member of Sedalia Symphony Board. She was also past chairman of the Johnson County American Cancer Society and memorial chairman of the American Cancer Society. Doris was a former member of Helen G. Steele Music Club in Sedalia and she was also a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.

Funeral services were Wednesday, Dec. 6, at Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Warrensburg with the Rev. Randy Crawshaw officiating.

Interment followed at Crown Hill Cemetery in Sedalia.
