Nita Joyce Hitchcock

Nita Joyce Hitchcock, 78, died Sept. 17, in Baptist Medical Center South Hospital in Montgomery, Alabama.

A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Sept. 24, at Sweeney-Phillips & Holdren Funeral Home. Interment will follow the service in Knob Noster Cemetery.

Family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until service time at the funeral home.

She was born Dec. 27, 1939, in Summit, Marion County, Arkansas.

Her parents were Auda H. Slagle and Stella Mae (McAlpin) Slagle. She was married to Kenneth A. Hitchcock for 34 years who died in 2008, and had one son, Kenneth A. Hitchcock, Jr.

Joyce graduated from Lee’s Summit High School in 1957 and worked at Unity in Lee’s Summit, Missouri, for many years before marrying her husband in 1974. She followed her husband in his air force career, which took them to Guam where their son was born. They lived in Knob Noster for many years and built many lasting relationships there with friends. During this time, she studied and worked at the Central Missouri State University. They lived a short time in Chicago, Illinois, and settled in Prattville, Alabama, where she lived at the time of her death.

She enjoyed reading, collecting dolls, watching her two favorite movies, “Gone with the Wind” and “The Wizard of Oz,” and spending time with her family. She loved her companion animals, especially her cats and her miniature Schnauzer grand-dogs, Liesel and Louie.

She is survived by her son, Ken Hitchcock and wife Michele, of Prattville; one brother, John H. Slagle (Kathy), of Holden, Missouri, and two sisters; Dorothy J. (Slagle) Vaughn (Danny) of Pleasant Hill, Missouri, and Jacquelyn M. (Slagle) Paterson (Scott) of Concordia, Missouri; brother-in-law Bill (Jane) Hitchcock of Greensburg, Indiana; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Elvira Ann (Slagle) Frieben and one brother, Bobby F. Slagle.

Contributions are requested to the American Cancer Society in her honor and checks may be left in care of the funeral home.
