Students to participate in marketing, sales competition

(WARRENSBURG, Mo.) – Students from across the country are scheduled to be on the UCM campus Friday for an annual marketing and sales competition.

This is the third consecutive year for the State Farm Marketing and Sales Competition, which gives students an opportunity to compete for financial awards to benefit their education while testing their skills in selling a mock auto insurance policy to young adult customers, according to a news release.

Charlie Schwepker, UCM professor of marketing, said the competition is a learning opportunity for students, and it is also a good way for State Farm to get a look at the quality of students who are preparing to enter the job market. The competition will last throughout the day and conclude in the evening with an awards program in the Elliott Union.

“We are honored and pleased to be hosting such a prestigious competition that offers students an opportunity to showcase their talents and to be recognized by industry professionals for their hard work,” Schwepker said. “With the support of State Farm, the competition serves to raise the stature of sales and marketing both educationally and professionally.”

College and universities joining UCM in the competition include Duquesne, Pittsburgh, Pa.; Louisiana State University; University of Missouri; University of Northern Colorado; University of Southern California; Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem, N.C.; and Western Michigan University.

Each participating school selected two students to travel to UCM to compete as individuals and teams. One of the challenges for students is to present their plan for how local agents can utilize social media to reach the young adult market.

Students will be judged by an independent panel of judges, and will receive an overall score to determine their ranking in the competition.

“The high caliber of students in this competition continues to impress us,” said State Farm Agency Vice President Bill Roundtree. “State Farm is glad to provide this opportunity for this year’s class and to be a part of their future success.”

State Farm helps cover travel expenses for all of the students selected to participate in this event, and makes the financial awards for top finishers possible, according to the news release.
