(WARRENSBURG, Mo., digitalBURG) — The sixth annual Show Me Justice Film Festival begins today where films from around the world will be featured.

show_me_justiceShannon Johnson, associate director of the Show Me Justice Film Festival, said the purpose of this event is to raise awareness about social justice. Through the films, people are encouraged to be inspired toward collective action against social injustices.

“When we say social justice, we’re really talking about some of the injustices that have occurred,” Johnson said.

Filmmakers cover a variety of topics related to injustices such as race issues, immigration issues and environmental issues, and suppressed democratic movements throughout the world.

During the festival, 34 movies from 12 countries including Australia, Canada, Cuba, England, France, Iran, Poland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and Ukraine will be featured. The genres of the movies are varied, such as documentary, animation, narrative and experimental films. Screen panels select which movies will be screened during the festival.

“We have a screening panel who can volunteer to watch the movies and rate them,” Johnson said. “We had 116 submissions that were reviewed by at least three individuals, and then we took the highest rated films.”

Tickets for the evening sessions of the two-day event hosted in Hendricks Hall cost $10 for adults and $5 for students and children and can be purchased at the door. Costs can be waived by bringing two canned goods per ticket. Johnson said he doesn’t recommend the afternoon screenings for children under the age of 10 due to profanity and adult themes.
