Masterworks Concert of ‘War & Peace’

April 28, 2015 @ 7:30 pm

UCM’s Department of Music and the Performing Arts Series are presenting the Masterworks Concert “War & Peace,” with performances of Gustav Holst’s “Mars, The Bringer of War” and Ralph Vaughn Williams’ “Dona Nobis Pacem” at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 28, in Hendricks Hall.

“Mars, The Bringer of War” is from “The Planets,” a seven-movement orchestral suite by the English composer Gustav Holst, written between 1914 and 1916. Each movement of the suite is named after a planet of the solar system and its corresponding astrological character as defined by Holst.

Ralph Vaughn Williams’ cantata, “Dona Nobis Pacem,” written in 1936, uses text from the “Mass,” Walt Whitman poems (written during the Civil War), a political speech and sections of the Bible, showing Vaughn Williams’ plea for peace by referring to recent wars during the growing fears of a new one.

The concert, conducted by Alan Zabriskie and John Rutland, features the UCM Concert Choir, Collegiate Choir, Women’s Choir, Symphony Orchestra and soloists Stella Roden and Jake Sentgeorge.
