(NEOSHO, Mo., AP) — City officials say an explosive device caused a blast at a recycling facility in southwest Missouri city that killed one person and injured another in what’s being investigated as a workplace accident.
The Joplin Globe (http://bit.ly/1CaDFAP) reports 20-year-old Cody D. Brisco was killed in the blast Monday morning and 23-year-old Tyler Spencer was injured. Spencer is listed in stable condition at a local hospital.
The city of Neosho said in a statement that Brisco and Spencer, both employees of USA Metal Recycling, were handling empty aluminum shell casings when they found what they didn’t know was an explosive device. They were examining it when it went off.
Neosho city spokesman Wes Franklin said USA Metal Recycling recycles military shell casings at its Neosho plant.
Franklin says the Occupational Safety and Health Administration will now lead the investigation.
