The Johnson County Historical Society has scheduled a meeting at 7 p.m. Saturday, June 15 at the Johnson County Historical Society Culp Building, 302 B North Main St., to plan for the upcoming Foraged Feast event. Dishes served during the Foraged Feast event will be in the style of the “Grasshopper Feast” of 1875 that took place in the old Estes Hotel in downtown Warrensburg. The “Rocky Mountain Locusts” had arrived in numbers in 1873 eating crops, fence posts and laundry, according to the historical society. Professors at the college, with the help of the state “grasshopperologist,” gathered bushels of hoppers that were piled 3 inches deep near the depot. Dishes were prepared, such as grasshopper soup and roasted grasshoppers. The Foraged Feast is scheduled for Sept. 29. The June 15 planning meeting will feature Paul Landkamer as organizer and guide.
