Johnie Lee Krigbaum, 83, of Holden, Missouri, formerly of Perry, died Tuesday, Jan. 2, at Research Medical Center in Kansas City following cardiac arrest.
Funeral services are set for 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, at Williams Funeral Chapel in Holden with the Rev. Charles Brant officiating. Interment will follow at the Holden Cemetery with military honors provided by Veterans of Foreign Wars, Memorial Post 5844; Munday-Hancock Post 90, American Legion and United States Navy Honors Team.
The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until service time Saturday at the funeral home.
Johnie was born Nov. 22, 1934, in Ralls County, Missouri, near Perry. He completed his basic training at Great Lakes Naval Station and he served in the United States Naval construction battalions – better known as the Seabees – for six years. Johnie served at Philippines, Okinawa and Saipan. He was united in marriage to Sandra Kay Grunder on Feb. 28, 1959, at Sunland, California. The couple lived in the San Fernando Valley area of California for 30 years. During this time, Johnie worked as a plumber and pipe fitter for a landscaping and sprinkler system company. He was actively involved in the installation of many of the sprinkler systems and landscaping at Disneyland when it was being constructed as well as at Universal Studios and the City of Industry golf course and resort.
After completing an instructor of plumbing and pipe fitting training program through Purdue University, Johnie taught college courses at Ventura College. In the early 1980s, he was baptized at Arleta Baptist Church in Arleta, California. Upon retiring in 1990, the couple moved to Oregon and purchased a blueberry farm. In 1994, Johnie and Sandra moved to Holden. They soon purchased a local apartment building as an investment. Sandra died in 2000.
Johnie was united in marriage to A. Susan (Warner) Chapman on Jan. 10, 2004, in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. During his retirement years, Johnie enjoyed going on escorted bus tours throughout the United States. He also loved spending time with family, especially his grandchildren. He was a member of Southern California Pipe Trades United Association, Local 387 for over 50 years.
Survivors include his wife, Susan; daughter, Michelle Straight and husband, Jared, of Holden; two stepdaughters, Janee Umbarger and husband, Doug, of Chanute, Kansas; and Jaclyn Emo and husband, Adam, of Shawnee, Kansas; two half-sisters, Bonnie Crenshaw and Susie Jennings, both of Curryville, Missouri; half-brother, Jay Goodhart and wife, Mary, of Curryville; two grandchildren, John Garcia and Kasey Wheeler; seven stepgrandchildren; one great-grandchild and three stepgreat-grandchildren. In addition to his first wife, Sandra, Johnie was preceded in death by his son, George Krigbaum; granddaughter, Melissa Krigbaum; and half-sister, Mary Hoover.
