(KANSAS CITY, Mo., AP) — A pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle on a highway in Kansas City.

The Kansas City Star reports (http://j.mp/29cwa51 ) the pedestrian was trying to cross U.S. 71 in Kansas City on Friday night when the crash occurred. Police say the driver swerved off the road to try to avoid the pedestrian, who died at the scene.

Police say the driver was not injured.

The victim’s identity hasn’t been released.
