Thomas Noel Craig, 48, was found dead of an apparent gunshot wound at approximately 5:15 a.m. June 1 by a Lafayette County sheriff’s deputy near the 1260 block of Northeast 1075 Road near the Dunksburg bridge, which is north of Knob Noster in Johnson County. Johnson County Sheriff Scott Munsterman asked the Rural Major Case Squad to handle the investigation.

After 42 investigators tracked more than 140 leads related to the homicide, Raymond Blake Brockway, 26, of Sedalia, Missouri, was identified as a person of interest in Craig’s death, according to a news release issued Monday. Brockway is being held in the Cooper County Detention Center in lieu of a $250,000 bond after being arrested for an unrelated probation violation warrant. Information regarding that arrest was not immediately available.

The Missouri Rural Major Case Squad was disbanded Monday after the four-day investigation into Craig’s death. The leads in the case are now manageable by the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, according to the news release. Rural Major Case Squad bylaws stipulate that the squad be disbanded after four days unless an extension is needed and approved by the board of directors.

The squad is a multiagency task force of officers from Lafayette, Johnson, Ray, Saline, Carroll, Pettis, Benton and Henry counties.
