Brent Vogel & Erin Alewine named Athletes of the Year

(NEW ORLEANS, La.) – Senior Brent Vogel and junior Erin Alewine were named the men’s and women’s USTFCCCA Central Region Field Athletes of the Year, announced Friday, after posting the top heptathlon and pentathlon scores in Division II this season.

Vogel, a senior from Jefferson City, Mo., won his second MIAA heptathlon title at the conference championships last weekend, helping lead the Mules to their sixth straight MIAA indoor track title. His score, 5,487 points in the heptathlon at the season-opening Doane College (Neb.) Happy Holidays Multi Event back in December, stood all season long as Division II’s top score and is the fourth-best mark in Division II history. Vogel will look for his second career national title, and his first in the indoor championships next weekend.

Alewine, also a native of Jefferson City, posted the best score in Division II on the women’s side, recording 4,152 points in the pentathlon at Doane College. The junior was the only athlete to top the 4,000-point mark this year, and her score ranks second in Division II history, just behind former teammate Lindsay Lettow. Alewine will compete in three events at the upcoming NCAA Indoor Track & FIeld Championships, including the pentathlon, long jump, where she is ranked third nationally, and the high jump, where she is ranked fifth.

Central Missouri track & field will send 11 athletes to the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, in Birmingham, Ala., taking place Friday and Saturday, March 8-9.
