Gov. Nixon cancels visit to UCM

(WARRENSBURG, Mo., digitalBURG) — Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon was scheduled to visit the University of Central Missouri today but canceled due to the weather, according to a news release.

State Treasurer Clint Zweifel was scheduled to join the governor Friday morning. The topic of the news conference was military preparedness and enhancement related to Whiteman Air Force Base, according to a news release.

They were scheduled to speak at the UCM Military and Veterans Success Center inside the Elliott Student Union, Room 117.

Jeff Murphy, assistant director of University Relations, said UCM President Charles Ambrose was notified Wednesday about the governor’s visit.

“The only information we have at this point is that it will be an announcement on the state’s coordinated effort to retain and enhance Missouri’s military bases, force strength and federal defense spending,” Murphy said.

Murphy said the university’s Military and Veteran’s Success Center was likely the reason Nixon chose to speak at UCM, as well as its proximity to Whiteman Air Force Base.

“The Military and Veteran’s Success Center provides an excellent location for a discussion about the effects of the military, and we’re also close to Whiteman so we expect some individuals from the base to be in attendance.”

Nixon previously visited the university in July when he appeared with President Obama.
