Charles Richard Griggs Sr., 90, of Holden, Missouri, died Tuesday, Dec. 2, at the Kansas City VA Medical Center.
Charles was born April 11, 1924, in Kansas City, Missouri, the son of John H. and Elva (Jones) Griggs. He enlisted in the United States Navy, having served on the USS Texas during World War II. He was united in marriage to Carmella DeCarlo on Aug. 23, 1942, in New York, New York. The couple moved to Holden in 1950. Charlie was employed with General Motors for 13 years until retiring due to health reasons. He was a member of St. Patricks Catholic Church. He was an avid collector of Native American relics for many years. Charlie was a member of the North American Cherokee Tribe, where he served as an elder and councilman.
Survivors include his wife, Carmella; two sons, Richard Griggs and wife, Carol, of Bates City, Missouri; and Kenneth Griggs and wife, Esta, of Salem, Virginia; three daughters, Rita Warren and husband, Keith, of Porter, Texas; Eileen O’Dell of Shawnee, Oklahoma; and Kathleen Miller of Shawnee, Oklahoma; three sisters, Dolly Dean of Denison, Texas; Mary Stanton and husband, Bob, of Kansas City; and Elva Osiek and husband, Zeke, of Independence, Missouri; three brothers, Jack Griggs and wife, Janet, of Oolagah, Oklahoma; Larry Griggs and wife, Loretta, of Independence; and Jerry Griggs of Smithville, Missouri; 24 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Carl, Donald and John.
Funeral services were Saturday, Dec. 6, at Williams Funeral Chapel in Holden with Father Pete Savidge and Pastor Pete Winstead officiating. Interment followed in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Holden with military honors provided by Veterans of Foreign Wars, Memorial Post 5844, Munday-Hancock Post 90, American Legion and United States Naval Reserve Honor Guard. Pallbearers were Richard Griggs, Rick Griggs, Steve Griggs, Kenneth Griggs, Mike Russell and Mark Fitch.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Oak Grove Nursing & Rehab Center Activity Fund in care of the funeral chapel.
