Five-year reunion set for Training School, College High, University High

(WARRENSBURG, Mo.) – The next all-school reunion for individuals who attended the Training School, College High School or University High School is set for this summer.

Celebrating memories of the laboratory school that was once part of the University of Central Missouri campus, the reunion is set for Friday and Saturday, June 12-13.

Co-chaired by College High graduates Bonnie Bartlett and Randy Ellis, the reunion committee has been meeting on a monthly basis with members of the UCM Office of Alumni Relations and Development to plan activities. Although more details, including registration information, will be released closer to the event, the reunion will give many participants an opportunity to enjoy new facilities that were not available on campus during the last reunion in 2010. The all-school event takes place every five years. Activities include a Friday evening social at Traditions restaurant, located in the Audrey J. Walton Clubhouse at Pertle Springs, as well as a luncheon and special program, class photos, and other activities Saturday at the Student Recreation and Wellness Center on campus.

The lab school at UCM traces its origins back to 1906 when the Missouri General Assembly approved $50,000 to construct the first training building. The school provided K-12 education to faculty members’ children and to youth from the Warrensburg and Centerview area, which at the time had no high school. It opened as the Training School, then became known as College High School, and was operating as University High School when it closed in 1976. The elementary school was open until 1980.

In 2007, a permanent memorial to the school, its students and faculty was dedicated west of the Student Recreation and Wellness Center, which was created through renovation and new construction at the sites that formerly housed Morrow and Garrison Gymnasiums.

The reunion planning committee is currently seeking updated information from graduates.
