Missouri police officer recovering after being struck by car

(KIRKWOOD, Mo., AP) — A Rock Hill police officer is recovering after being struck by a vehicle in Kirkwood that fled and later crashed into a utility pole.

According to the Missouri Highway Patrol, a 31-year-old man was driving the car that struck Officer Steven Sperber in Kirkwood Sunday morning. The Highway Patrol says a woman and two minors were passengers.

Rock Hill City Administrator Jennifer Yackley said Monday that Sperger was “awake and cognizant” as he recovers from his head injuries at St. Louis University Hospital. Yackley said the minors were transported to and released from a hospital.

She said that the two adults are still in the hospital, and that criminal charges are likely to be filed in the case.
