Kansas City starts safety campaign for streetcars

(KANSAS CITY, Mo., AP) — Although streetcars won’t start operating in Kansas City until next year, the city is already considering a campaign to teach the public how to avoid getting hit by a streetcar.

The Streetcar Authority board on Thursday discussed the Respect the Rail campaign, which will begin a slow roll out next week. The city will use social media, signs, slogans and other strategies with a logo proclaiming “Be Smart. Be Safe. Be Ready.”

The Kansas City Star reports (http://bit.ly/1DTdgIr) the messages are aimed at everyone who will eventually interact with the streetcars on the 2.2-mile downtown route.

The messages will discuss how to drive on the tracks, where to park to avoid the tracks and how cyclists and others can avoid getting stuck between the tracks.
