Myron K. ‘Mike’ Carter

Myron K. “Mike” Carter, 77, of Warrensburg, died Tuesday, Dec. 22, at Country Club Care Center.

Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 29, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Warrensburg with Pastor Joel Kurz officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:30 until 8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 28, at Sweeney-Phillips & Holdren Funeral Home in Warrensburg. A private interment will follow at a later date. Honorary pallbearers are Brian Carter, Brett Carter, Ben Carter, Shawn Hovde, Christopher Hovde, Robb Vandaveer, Rob Russell and Randy Russell.

Mike was born Aug. 20, 1938, in Grandview, Iowa, the son of Kenneth E. and Alice (Daily) Carter.

Mike attended Wapello, Iowa, and Monticello, Iowa, public schools. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Iowa, his master’s from Central Missouri State College, and his doctorate from the University of Utah.

Mike was united in marriage to SueAnn Hovde on Dec. 14, 1963, in Concordia, Missouri.

Mike taught at UCM for 52 years. Early in his career at UCM, he coached wrestling and gymnastics (starting the gymnastics team), and was an assistant football coach. He served as an adviser to the Alpha Gamma Delta sorority and the Sigma Tau Gamma fraternity. He served on the Missouri Boys State athletic staff, was a member of the Warrensburg Chamber of Commerce, the Military Affairs Committee, and the Whiteman Air Force Base Community Council. In 2013, he established the Mike Carter Scholarship Award for Veterans at UCM.

Family, friends, students and community were always foremost in Mike’s life. He loved teaching and his students. He was a dedicated professional. His favorite pastimes included sports, especially golf, fishing, hunting for artifacts, mowing his lawn, and spending time with friends.

Mike is survived by his wife, SueAnn, of Warrensburg; two sons, Matthew M. Carter and wife, Sharri, of Warrensburg; and Marc Carter and wife, Andrea, of Warrensburg; four grandchildren, Ty Carter, Montana Carter, Addison Carter and Brady Carter, all of Warrensburg; one brother, Ken Carter and wife, Bonnie, of Altoona, Iowa; six nephews, Brian Carter, Brett Carter, Ben Carter, Shawn Hovde, Christopher Hovde and Robb Vandaveer; and two nieces, Gina Butler and Geri Fuhrman.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Sharon Ann Carter.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Mike Carter Endowment for Military Students, the UCM Athletic Training Department, or the Johnson County Cancer Association and can be left in care of the funeral home.
