(KANSAS CITY, Mo., AP) — Investigators are trying to determine why a woman’s car stopped on a Kansas City interstate, leading to an accident that killed her, three of her young children and a family friend.
The car stopped in a far right-hand lane of the interstate Saturday evening and was hit from behind by a tractor-trailer, killing everyone in the vehicle, police said.
The victims were identified as the car’s driver, 24-year-old Shante Hopkins of Warrensburg; her two daughters, 2-year-old Ja Riah Hutchinson and 1-year-old Nijah Hutchinson; her 7-month-old son, Tay Shawn Hutchinson; and a family friend, 17-year-old Dominique Johnson of Kansas City.
The truck driver was not hurt. Police said in a statement he tested negative for drugs and alcohol after the crash and was cooperating with the investigation. Witness accounts and physical evidence showed the car came to a complete halt in the traffic lane, police said.
Investigators plan to examine the car Monday to determine if mechanical trouble or a lack of gas might have caused it to stop.
Hopkins’ parents, Paulette Kelley and Riccardo Smith of Warrensburg, said their daughter was a good mother, The Kansas City Star reported (http://bit.ly/1HVDr2F).
“She was a lovable woman who always took care of her kids. Her priorities were her four babies,” Smith said. Hopkins’ 8-year-old son was with Smith and Kelley in Warrensburg when the accident occurred.
Kelley said her daughter had recently moved from Kansas City to Warrensburg and was returning from a Christmas trip to see the children’s father when the accident happened.
Hopkins said his daughter and grandchildren will likely be buried in Kansas City but no funeral plans have been made, in part because the family is unsure how it will pay for four funerals.
