UCM athletics announces 2015-16 Hall of Fame induction class

(WARRENSBURG, Mo.)University of Central Missouri athletics officials recently announce the 2015-2016 inductees to the UCM Athletic Hall of Fame.

Nine individuals, one group, and one team make up this year’s induction class, which will be enshrined on Saturday, Feb. 20, 2016.

Joining the Hall of Fame this year are Tyrone Lee (men’s basketball, 1981-85) from the early era; Anne Carlson (women’s track & field, 2006-09), Eric Czerniewski (football, 2006-10), Brian McBryde (baseball, 2005-08), Ivan Varbanov (men’s track and field, 2001-04), Sanijay Watts (men’s basketball, 2008-10), and Justin Yoder (men’s golf, 2006-10) from the modern era. Entering the hall in the special recognition category are Dr. David Glover and Dr. Brent Hoke, UCM team physicians; and the Mules Wrestling table crew of Sarah Bailey, David Curtis and Dorothy Mayabb. The 1998 Mules track and field team will be enshrined as well.

Tyrone Lee
Men’s Basketball, 1981-85
Lee played and started in all 120 games of his UCM career. He holds the UCM career record along with teammate Ron Nunnelly, for games played and was a member of 1983-84 National Championship team. The Mules were a combined 94-26 during his four year career. He led then CMSU in rebounding from his sophomore through senior seasons and has the 10th highest single season rebounding total in school history with 261. He ranks third in school history with 847 career rebounds, a 7.1 rebounds per game average.

Anne Carlson
Women’s Track & Field, 2006-09
Carlson won the 2009 Pentathlon National Championship. She was a three-time All-American, earning honors in the 2007 and 2008 heptathlon in addition to her title in the pentathlon. She ranks in UCM’s Top 10 in five events and scored in seven different events at the MIAA Championships. As a senior she was named the Dr. Peggy Martin Award winner as UCM’s Top Female Senior Student-Athlete. She is currently the head track coach at Edinboro University.

Eric Czerniewski
Football, 2006-10
Arguably the best quarterback in Division II history, Czerniewski won the 2010 Harlon Hill Trophy as top player in Division II, the only player in UCM history to win the award. He was a First Team All-American by every publication, the national, regional and MIAA Offensive Player of the Year and set the then NCAA-II record with 5,207 passing yards his senior season. He led the nation in touchdown passes (46), total offense (5,203) and set 20 school records that season. He threw for more than 300 yards 10 times during 2010 season and finished his career fourth all-time in Division II with an MIAA record 12,847 passing yards. He set MIAA single-season records for passing yards, completions (447) and TDs (46). He was a three-time All-MIAA honoree, was MVP of the Cactus Bowl Division II All-Star Game, and a four-time MIAA Academic Honor Roll member. He also earned First Team Academic All-District honors and won the Vernon Kennedy Award as UCM’s Top Male Senior Student-Athlete.

Brian McBryde
Baseball, 2005-08
McBryde was a three-time All-MIAA selection including two first team nods during his career with Mules baseball, and he was also the MIAA Freshman of the Year in 2005. He is the UCM and MIAA career leader in games played (246), hits (312), total bases (444), and sacrifice hits (26). He ranks first all-time at UCM in career doubles (66), he is fourth in runs scored (223), tied for seventh in triples (12), 10th in RBI (159), and second in assists (597). His 93 hits as a senior are tied for the ninth most in a single-season in school history, while his 21 doubles that year are the sixth most in a season and his seven triples as a freshman are the seventh most. His 178 assists in each of his sophomore and senior seasons are tied for the sixth most in a single season in program history.

Ivan Varbanov
Men’s Track & Field, 2001-04
Varbanov was a two-time national champion during his time with Mules track and field. He won the indoor high jump and triple jump at the same national meet in 2003. He was a 10-time All-American during his career in both the indoor and outdoor high jump and triple jump. He holds the school records in the high jump indoor (7’3) and outdoor (7’2.5). He ranks second in school history in the triple jump indoor (51-9.25) and outdoor (52’8.25).

Sanijay Watts,
Men’s Basketball, 2008-10
Watts earned All-America honors during both of his seasons with Mules basketball. He was the 2010 MIAA and South Central Region Player of the Year and a two-time First Team All-MIAA selection. He is the only two-year player in UCM history to record more than 1,000 points and 500 rebounds. He led the MIAA in scoring (21.7 ppg) and rebounding (9.5 rpg) during his senior season and ranks 12th all-time at UCM in scoring (1,214 points) and 14th in rebounding (507 rebounds). His 21.7 points per game as a senior is 11th best single-season mark in program history and his 673 total points that year are eighth best. His 295 rebounds that year are fourth most in a single-season and his 9.5 rebounds per game average is 16th best. He was a part of the 2008-09 Final Four team and the 2009-10 MIAA Championship team that advanced to the Sweet Sixteen. He was named the Vernon Kennedy Award winner as UCM’s Top Male Senior Student-Athlete and was selected to play in the NABC Division II All-Star Game following his senior season.

Justin Yoder
Men’s Golf, 2006-10
Yoder was a three-time All-American for Mules golf and arguably the best golfer in program history. He was the National runner-up in 2010 when he also won MIAA Tournament and Super Region titles. That season he was named to the All-Nicklaus team, which honors the top 24 collegiate golfers in the country no matter their division (I, II, III, NAIA and NJCAA). He was a four-time All-MIAA and All-Region selection and earned two MIAA Player of the Year awards. His 72.5 career stroke average is the best in Mules Golf history. He was a school-record 12 tournaments during his career and was named a Vernon Kennedy Award winner as Central Missouri’s Top Senior Male Student-Athlete.

Drs. David Glover & Brent Hoke
UCM Team Physicians
Dr. Glover began working with UCM athletics in 1981 with Dr. Hoke joining him later. Both physicians, along with their partners at Central Family Medicine, were honored with UCM’s Distinguished Service Award at spring 2014 commencement.

Mules Wrestling Head Table Crew
For decades, the Mules wrestling head table crew of Sarah Bailey, David Curtis and Dorothy Mayabb have volunteered their service to Mules wrestling and UCM Athletics administering home UCM wrestling tournaments. Sarah and David have been volunteering at UCM wrestling events since the days of Hall of Fame coach Roger Denker, while Dorothy has put in many years of service as well to ensure the tournaments, which often include hundreds of wrestlers from around the country, run smoothly and efficiently.

1998 Mules Track & Field
The 1998 mules track and field team won the MIAA Indoor and Outdoor Conference Championships and went on to place third at both the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor National Championships. Vladimir Golias (steeplechase), Jeff Sander (decathlon), and Andrei Skvortsov (indoor pole vault) captured individual national championships for the Mules that year.

The annual Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, 2016, in the Sandra Temple Elliott Union Ballroom. Tickets are $15 per person and may be purchased by calling the UCM Athletic Office at 660-543-4250 before Feb. 12, 2016.
