(WARRENSBURG, Mo.) – The Performing Arts Series and the department of music at the University of Central Missouri are scheduled to host a world premiere performance of “Soldier’s Tale/Devil’s Tale” Monday, Nov. 16, in the Hart Recital Hall.
The concert is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. and will bring together musicians from the Kansas City Symphony and faculty musicians from the department of music, with dramatic and dance performance by faculty and students from the department of theatre and dance, according to a news release.
The evening will pair the classic dramatic work “Histoire du Soldat” (The Soldier’s Tale) with the modern sequel, “The Devil’s Tale.”
“Soldier’s Tale,” composed in 1916 by Igor Stravinsky, is a theatrical work conceived around the writings of C.F. Ramuz and based on a Russian folk tale of a soldier who trades his violin to the devil in return for unlimited financial gain.
“Devil’s Tale” was written in 2013 by American composer James Stephenson as a sequel to Stravinsky’s famous work, weaving the story from the point at which the original left off and circling back to the point at which the adventure began.
Scott Lubaroff, chair of the department of music and director of bands, will conduct the ensemble. John Wilson, chair of the department of theatre and dance, will perform the narrated and dramatic parts.
Tickets for “Soldier’s Tale/Devil’s Tale” are $3 for students and $7 for adults and are available online at www.ucmpas.com, at the Central Tickets box office in Administration Room 100B from 9-11 a.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday, or by calling 660-543-8888, or one hour prior to showtime at Hart Recital Hall.
The concert is part of PAS Guest Artist Series in partnership with the Kansas City Symphony Community Outreach Program. Financial assistance was provided by the Missouri Arts Council.
